Rhaphidophora hayi, commonly known as the Shingle Plant or Shingle Vine, is a rare and fascinating tropical houseplant prized for its unique “shingling” growth habit. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this plant naturally climbs tree trunks, with its stems pressing closely against surfaces while the leaves lie flat—resembling overlapping green roof shingles.
Unlike many other aroids, the Shingle Plant is not grown for its flowers. While it can produce a typical aroid bloom (a small spathe and spadix) in its natural habitat, flowering is rare indoors and not particularly showy. Instead, its true appeal lies in its neat, structured foliage and its ability to create a living, vertical green wall effect when trained on a board or moss pole.
Rhaphidophora ‘Hayi’ stands out for its distinctive shingling growth pattern, where leaves grow flat against a surface, creating a clean, architectural look unlike typical trailing or climbing plants. Its rarity and unique form make it highly desirable among collectors, while its vertical growth habit makes it perfect for small spaces or decorative plant boards.
